Her courses include ethnomusicology, popular music, Western music history, podcasting, and travel-based courses to Navajo Nation and the Sea Islands. She writes about intersections between race, media, region, music and identity, particularly related to southern US styles and genres. Her first book Louisiana Hayride: Radio and Roots Music Along the Red River (OUP, 2004; 2015), delved into the historic radio barn dance that launched both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley to the national spotlight. She has given talks, interviews, and short articles on the musical institution whose heyday ran from 1948 to 1960 ever since. Other books include Austin City Limits: A History (OUP, 2014); and Austin City Limits: A Monument to Music (Insight Editions, 2015), co-authored with Brandon Laird. Both projects extend her interests in music-making from radio to television media, specifically public broadcasting. In 2018, Laird joined as co-author for the 4th edition of Bill C. Malone’s groundbreaking Country Music, U.S.A., celebrating its 50th anniversary. She has since published scholarly writing on Rhiannon Giddens’s first two solo albums and enjoyed a joyful trip through the life and career so far of Dolly Parton.
