Stephen Wing and Luz Wright--A Book Signing in Celebration of Wild Atlanta: Greenspaces & Nature Preserves of 'The City in the Forest'

Event date:
Saturday, November 25, 2023 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Charis welcomes Stephen Wing and Luz Wright for a celebration of Wild Atlanta: Greenspaces & Nature Preserves of 'The City in the Forest' at our Indies First Celebration! Stephen and Luz will chat with readers, take photos, and sign books in person at Charis Books and More. No reservation or ticket required.

For over a decade, Atlanta poet Stephen Wing has been exploring the city’s many hidden pockets of wild nature with a group of fellow poets. These poems offer a sampling of the riches he has found there— treasures worth preserving as the city expands its footprint of concrete and powerlines. For this collection, photographer Luz Wright has captured portraits of the magical places depicted in Wing’s poems through the unique perspective of her lens. The result is a luminous collaboration of word and image, imagery and vision, natural beauty and human imagination.

Stephen Wing discovered the wilderness in the summer after ninth grade, and suddenly the world made sense. A deep connection to wild nature has been his spiritual center ever since. His work as a poet ranges from the personal to the pastoral to the fiercely political. Once each season he hosts the “Earth Poetry” workshop, exploring metro Atlanta's many protected greenspaces and nature preserves. His new book Wild Atlanta combines poems from 23 of these locations with stunning color photos by Luz Wright. He is the author of three previous books of poems and the "Earth Poetry" chapbook series. Visit him at StephenWing.com.

Born in Bogota, Colombia, Luz Wright grew up rebelling against a culture of gender inequality. At age 22 she moved to Paris, where she obtained her first camera. Exploring the legendary beauty of the city through its lens was a revelation. In Connecticut, while raising her daughter Alyosha, she began to win awards for her photography. Luz speaks three languages, has lived in seven countries and visited 25. Photography has always been her driving force, especially when surrounded by the inspiration of nature. She has shown her work at the Norwalk Community Art Gallery, the Refuge Coffee Spring Festival, and the city of Pine Lake’s annual Lakefest, among other places.
