The Poet X: A Celebration with Elizabeth Acevedo

Event date:
Monday, March 12, 2018 - 7:30pm to 9:00pm

Join Charis in celebrating the magic that is The Poet X, the debut novel by slam poet Elizabeth Acevedo! The Poet X is both a long-form free verse poem and the unforgettable coming of age tale of Xiomara Batista, who feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.

But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers--especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about.

With Mami's determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself. So when she is invited to join her school's slam poetry club, she doesn't know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out. But she still can't stop thinking about performing her poems.

This is a book for poets and dreamers of all ages and anyone who ever poured their soul into a notebook because it was the only suitable and safe vessel. This event is geared towards young people ages 12 and up and adults.

Elizabeth will be joined by youth poets from Atlanta Word Works. (Bios to come).

Elizabeth will sign copies of The Poet X as well as her debut book of poems, Beastgirl & Other Origin Myths.

The youngest child and only daughter of Dominican immigrants, Elizabeth Acevedo has more than fourteen years of performance poetry experience, and her talent for storytelling has translated seamlessly into novel-writing.
