Charis welcomes the Makeshift Circus Collective to the Mutual Aid Liberation Center (home of Project South and The Georgia Citizen's Coalition on Hunger) for a very special Father's Day circus mantinee!
MakeShift Circus Collective has been producing works that delve into social dynamics relevant to our own community since 2014.
SPECTRUM: the Gender Project is currently brewing in our collective calderon. The production is based on 30 interviews that were gathered by socially engaged artists who went to their own communities and collected experiences of Atlanta residents occupying diverse gender identities. On this journey, we are telling our own stories from within the stories of our community. Following each performance, we break the fourth wall and invite the audience on to the stage to share their stories with us and each other.
The SPECTRUM: the Gender Project cast features a hand-picked, deeply diverse, and well balanced group of aerialists, jugglers, drag artists, and seasoned burlesque performers. The cast is co-creating pieces that channel each art form in unexpected ways.
This is a public event open to everyone. It contains some themes of gender based violence but is appropriate for most children over the age of 10. Each show is entirely free of charge. At the end of the experience, we will pass the hat in support of a local non-profit organization that is doing direct service work with the communities most touched by gender based injustice.
