The Living Wisdom of Howard Thurman

Event date:
Monday, October 9, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Charis Circle and Charis Books are proud to partner with Kirkwood United Church of Christ to highlight this special educational series on the life and spirit-led social justice work of Howard Thurman.

Mystic, theologian, and sacred activist, Howard Thurman ((1899-1981) served as mentor and guide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many other leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. Though he has many books, Jesus and the Disinherited, published in 1949, offers wisdom that we all need as we seek to live into God’s justice and love today.

Dr. Lerita Coleman Brown, spiritual director and writer, will lead this Spiritual Learning Community for Kirkwood United Church of Christ and Charis Books/Charis Circle. We invite anyone who is interested in the relationship of inner silence/contemplation and social justice work to participate. People of all faiths including secular humanists are welcome to attend and share.

Although this is a four part educational series you do not have to attend all four parts, nor do you have to have read any Howard Thurman before attending.  Please register, indicating which sessions you'd like to attend, so that we will know how many folks to expect. The workshop is free. ( The Living Wisdom of Howard Thurman) Howard Thurman’s books will be provided for sale by Charis Books and More (

We will meet on Mondays from 7-8:30pm on October 9 and 16 and November 6 and 13. If requested, childcare will be provided. All sessions will be at Kirkwood UCC at 100 Rogers St. in Atlanta.

Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of His life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. Hatred does not empower--it decays.
