Celebrate Southern Lesbian Organizing with Sinister Wisdom's "Hot Spots" Issue!

Event date:
Saturday, August 25, 2018 - 7:30pm to 9:00pm

Join Charis in celebrating the fourth issue in Sinister Wisdom's series covering lesbian-feminist activism in the late twentieth-century South, focusing on lesbian gathering places and ways that lesbians created community while continuing activism. Sinister Wisdom 109: Hot Spots explores the Southern spaces where lesbians gathered and organized during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Because there was no social media, no high-speed communication, lesbians relied on the US Post Office, telephones, and face-to-face contact to organize. Public advertising such as newspaper ads, flyers, and leaflets, had to be done carefully and discreetly. Though we have access to different technologies for organizing today, learning about events of the past gives us templates to formulate and support activism in the present and future. Writers from this issue including Rose Norman, Gail Reeder, Drea Firewalker and B. Leaf Cronewrite (Mary Ann Hopper) will share excerpts from their work and Lorraine Fontana will read excerpts from a piece by Pam Edwards. Copies of Sinister Wisdom are available now at Charis.

This is a Charis Circle From Margin to Center Literary Event. The suggested donation is $5.
